Year 7 Ocean Explorers

Mar 21, 2025

Our Year 7 Ocean Explorers have made a great start with their sessions this spring. The first week they met the Head Ranger at Croyde who talked to us about the problems associated with plastic pollution, before taking action with a beach clean. They also observed the ranger doing a preliminary examination of a dead seal which had washed up on the shore, as part of the Marine Strandings Network Procedures.

The second week they made the most of having a very low tide for the session and explored the parts of the shore that are mostly underwater. They used loupe lenses to have a closer look at some of the sea creatures and plants and took some exceptional photos of their findings through the lenses. The highlights were seeing clusters of whelk eggs and huge colonies of honeycomb worms.

Week 3 saw the Ocean Explorers visit North Hole Fram near Georgeham, an organic farm who strive to be as environmentally friendly as possible. The students saw the robot milker in action, learnt about the soil on the farm and enjoyed getting some hands-on experience feeding some of the animals. We are all looking forward to the upcoming sessions in the next 3 weeks.
